To Every Exhausted High School Student

This is an open letter to all of the high school students:

With winter quarter kicking in full force, life might seem tough right now. With the impossible standards to keep up with academics, sports, extra curricular activities, while maintaining a social life AND getting a good night’s sleep too; It can feel so overwhelming. I didn’t even get to all of the personal problems that you may be dealing with on top of that. Even though it feels like high school will never end, it will. High school is only the beginning of the rest of your life.

At this very moment, you have the chance to set yourself in any direction you want to go in life.  You are not tied down to a job, or to a spouse, or to any college debt. A lot of people wish they could go back to this time in their life and do things differently. What’s stopping you now? Your worth is not defined by your grades, but that’s no excuse to slack off. All the clothing and accessories that are trending right now and you wishing you could afford all of that? It will all become ugly in a few months. That guy you keep tweeting about and losing sleep over? You most likely won’t remember him in a few years. That popular girl who gets tons of likes and attention? Eventually there will be someone new in the spotlight and everyone will forget about her too.

You failed a test and it feels like the end of the world. But i promise you it isn’t. Please don’t beat yourself up for mistakes that could’ve happened to anyone. High school can be hard, but don’t make it harder on yourself. Brush it off, work harder next time, and move on. You don’t need to feel pity and act like a special snowflake, because whether you know it or not, we’ve all been there. We all have different experiences of high school, but our struggles were all the same. By the end of your senior year, it’ll be solely up to you if you want to graduate or not. Right now at this very moment, you don’t feel the weight of what an education can really cost, your education is free and you want to waste that? I don’t want you to look back at high school and have major regrets that have effected your future. You will wish you hadn’t skipped all of those classes to hang out with people you’re not friends with anymore, you will wish you were more respectful to your teachers because you’ll finally realize all the hard work they do and the crap they put up with. You will wish that you didn’t try fixing your personal issues with drugs, alcohol, sleepless nights, letting the wrong people use you, or self harm and lose yourself in the process.

You will get through it.

You will get to walk on that stage.

You will get accepted into college when others were doubting you.

You will move on to bigger and better things.

You will be able to leave the past behind and create a good future for yourself.

You will be able to beat the odds and accomplish everything people said you couldn’t do.

You don’t need approval from grades, your friends, or your family to show that you are worthy of being happy and reaching your goals. No one can convince you but yourself.

To every exhausted high school student out there: Hang on. You will survive.
