Telling Me To “Just Pray About It” Wont Fix All My Problems

It is no secret that the christian life can be hard sometimes. Life in general can be hard sometimes. It is a wonderful thing to be in a community where you feel safe to share what you’re going through, your accomplishments and your struggles, knowing that you have people that will support you no matter what. I’m thankful that I have people in my life who support me and give me wonderful advice whenever I am struggling. Sometimes, though, there are no easy answers to certain questions. While people do mean well, whenever they don’t really know how to react to certain situations, their go-to answer is to “just pray about it.” I am not saying this is wrong to say, of course we should continue in prayer with God. But to someone who is deeply hurting and looking for answers, it almost doesn’t feel right to say that.

Their intentions are in the right place, but when someone resorts to that advice it usually means two things:

  1. They don’t know how else to help with your situation
  2. They are not willing to invest their time and dig deep into the issue.

I’ll admit, i’ve done this before. People used to ask me advice all the time on ask.fm and  sometimes I would say this. It sounded like a “christian” enough answer, without actually investing too much time into what the actual question was.

The bible tells us to pray without ceasing (1 Thes. 5:17, Col 4:2, Eph. 6:18) Jesus gives us an example of how to pray (Matt. 6:5-13) it builds our relationship with our Father who hears every single word we utter (Pslam 34:17). There are hundreds of verses regarding the importance of prayer. Prayer is vital to your relationship with God. If you were friends with someone you dearly loved, wouldn’t you want to communicate everyday and build a stronger bond? It is similar with God as well. There is no question in my mind how extremely necessary prayer is.

But… is “just pray about it” a one size fits all answer? I just can’t see that. There are so many complicated and messy issues that happen in life, where there are no easy answers to. If only we all had the faith of a mustard seed, we wouldn’t be anxious about anything. But we don’t. A lot of us barely cling onto the fact that God has our life under control. God already knows your hardship, and He is right there with you.  There is a Heavenly Father who understands our struggles, who knows us better than we know ourselves, and who hears our cries for help when you just don’t know what to do anymore. For God to give us an unfathomable peace in our hearts, when everything around us is chaos.

God gave us the church to be a family, meaning that we work on our issues together. God has also given us people in our lives that would love to walk with you and hear you out. There are people available to you that will encourage you and give you helpful, biblical advice, give you resources, and to help you think for yourself. We are not meant to walk through life alone, because no one has life really figured out. It is a blessing in disguise to have people walk in you in your journey with God and try and figure this life thing out.

  1. Great point!
When there’s no answer, it’s best to say that you have no clue why this is happening in your friends life or what they should do in certain situation AND that YOU will be praying for them… I think that is much more supportive than simply sending them on their way to pray.
Great reminder to us all! Thanks Sana!
